The Asset-Based Community Development Institute (ABCD) is at the center of a large and growing movement that considers local assets as the primary building blocks of sustainable community development. Building on the skills of local residents, the power of local associations, and the supportive functions of local institutions, asset-based community development draws upon existing community strengths to build stronger, more sustainable communities for the future.

We invite you to learn about the institute and its work in the university and community context. We hope you will join us in building strong communities.

A New Home

The ABCD Institute is excited and proud to announce our new partnership and home at DePaul University’s Irwin W. Steans Center for Community-Based Service Learning & Community Service Studies located in Chicago, Illinois. We look forward to working with the Steans Center, the Egan Office for Urban Education & Community Partnerships, staff, students and faculty of DePaul University and their many community partners.

The ABCD Institute makes this move with gratitude for the support provided by Northwestern University over the past 29 years where Jody Kretzmann and other ABCD faculty members continue to teach. In particular we are grateful to Northwestern University’s Center for Civic Engagement whose work continues to embody and advance the asset-based community development work initiated in the 1980’s by John McKnight and Jody Kretzmann.
