Ruthie Yow works in community engagement and sustainability at Georgia Tech's Center for
Serve-Learn-Sustain. Before coming to Georgia Tech, Ruthie completed a PhD in American
Studies and African American Studies at Yale University. Her research engaged equity at the
intersection of race, power, and education in the American South; the resulting book, Students
of the Dream: Resegregation in a Southern City (Harvard University Press in 2017), examines
the work of students of color to re-imagine their public schools. Before she knew to call it that,
she took an ABCD approach to documenting and supporting integration and educational equity
as enacted by organizations like Marietta YELLS (Youth Empowerment through Learning,
Leading, and Serving) for which she volunteers and serves as a board member. She is delighted
and honored to serve on the ABCD Board.
