Martial Arts & Safety Classes

CPR / Self-Defense / Martial Arts (Karate and Filipino Martial Arts)

CPR / AED

We offer American Heart Association Heartsaver Adult/Child/Infant CPR/AED certification for DePaul students, faculty, and staff ($13.50) and the community ($45). Register at the Membership Services desk, online, or through The Ray at DePaul app.

Basic Self-Defense

Provided by IMPACT Chicago
Classes provide safety skill instruction including awareness, basic verbal techniques and elementary physical responses to unwanted verbal or physical confrontation. Instruction is focused and designed for female participation. Additional classes may be set up for male participants and student organization groups .

Youth Karate

Youth ages 6-13
Friday, 6:15-7:15 pm and Saturday 11 am - noon
Monthly Classes
Classes are high energy and full of fun and excitement.  Students learn principles, history, and philosophy of Karate. Classes include physical activity and an education component.

In the class you will learn:

  • Stranger danger
  • Bullying prevention
  • Principals of Karate (respect, discipline, confidence, good character)
  • Understand physical and non-physical threats
  • Understand the importance of healthy living
  • Goal setting and the pursuit of achieving goals
  • Abduction prevention
  • Emergency situation response and action

Filipino Martial Arts

Members $95/month, non-members $125/month
Ages 18+
Tuesdays and Thursdays 8:30 - 10 pm

Filipino Martial Arts is known for stick fighting and also includes training on empty handed fighting, boxing, grappling, and healing (Hilot). FMA relies on speed and proper body mechanics, rather than strength and size.  This system is perfect for those looking for self-defense and fitness while learning a new skill.
