This past week I attended a show that was unlike any other I have been to while living in Chicago. After coming across the webpage for Sofar Sounds Chicago, I knew I wanted to attend one of their shows. The idea of Sofar Sounds is to create unique experiences in which local and touring artists perform in hidden spaces across the entire city. When browsing through events, you can choose from Chicago shows happening in West Loop, Ukranian Village, Lincoln Park, River North, Logan Square, Pilsen, Hyde Park, or Bucktown. Since the location is hidden until the day before the show, you are able to choose based on the nearest ‘L’ stop. However, since seating is limited not everyone will receive a ticket. If you do win a ticket through the lottery system, you are able to purchase multiple for friends and/or family you’d like to bring along with you.At each Sofar Sounds show, there are three artist performances of which the audience has no prior knowledge of. The show that I attended featured Rand, Mel Chante, and Miki Fiki. Although I had not heard of any of these artists, I ended up enjoying each show immensely. The first and last performances were musical, while the second was a spoken word performance. Sofar Sounds does a good job ensuring there is a variety of artists to suit every taste. My favorite part of the event was the atmosphere; many people brought along blankets and beverages to make themselves more comfortable and relaxed in the intimate venue. I highly recommend checking out a Sofar Sounds show for yourself!
