Smino at House of Blues

rap artist Smino
At the end of last quarter, one of my roommates and I attended a show at the House of Blues for a rap artist we’ve been dying to see for awhile, Smino. He’s originally from St. Louis but has ties to Chicago and the rappers that reside here so we knew he would make an appearance at some point, we just didn’t know when. Finally, a few months ago he announced he would be headlining his first U.S. tour, and we immediately bought tickets to what quickly became a sold-out show. Another show was even added for the following night since the first one sold out so quickly and unexpectedly.
Since I have been listening to Smino’s music since I started college, finally seeing him live was an experience like no other. Although there were definitely a few technical difficulties and little hiccups, the end result was something special. Smino put on an incredible performance, and everyone who attended was buzzing with excitement from start to finish.
His opener, Phoelix, was extremely talented as well and complemented his performance in the best way. Toward the end of Smino’s show, he even brought out fellow rapper Saba who is well-known in the Chicago rap scene and an integral part of the group Pivot Gang. All of these rappers do what they can to help each other succeed and it’s one of my favorite parts about Chicago’s rap culture.
Seeing so many talented artists in one evening made me excited to see what these guys do next. Nights like this one remind me how grateful I am to live in Chicago and be able to experience such exciting shows on a regular basis.
