Last year, the idea of rushing a sorority was not even a thought on my mind. No one in my family was ever a part of Greek life, and it has never been something that particularly drew my attention. In the past, I had the tendency to equate being in a sorority with extreme hazing, being judged based off of your looks, and having to constantly impress those around you. Throughout my freshman year, I learned that Greek life at DePaul is not at all what I thought. From attending sorority events and getting to know the girls involved in them, I realized that DePaul does Greek life differently than your typical state school. For instance, at DePaul, only 10% of the student population is involved in a sorority or fraternity, which creates a much more laid-back environment. Many state schools have tons of chapters, while DePaul only has 8 sororities and 7 fraternities. Along with this, those who are involved with Greek life are able to balance it with other commitments such as classes, jobs, internships, other extracurricular activities, etc.

As I start recruitment this week, I’m excited to get to know how Greek life at DePaul differs from my initial misconceptions. Meeting each chapter and getting to know the girls who are a part of them is something I’m looking forward to, and I’m hoping that my open-mindedness going into this process helps me to find what works for me, whatever that may be.
Even if I don’t find my “Home away from home” as many sororities proudly advertise, I hope to take some lessons away from the experience of recruitment and learn more about myself as well as the countless girls I will be meeting. Although I am anxious about how the whole process will play out, I also can’t wait to start meeting all of the strong women who represent the 8 chapters at DePaul.
