Have you heard the news yet? DePaul University will be closed this upcoming Monday, May 25th for Memorial Day! So bring out those grills, text your friends and family, and sit back to enjoy a lovely three day weekend.
It is always nice to get an extra day to relax and rest, but why exactly do we celebrate Memorial Day? Well, Memorial Day is a day of remembering those that have died while in the service of the United Stated of America. Originally called “Decoration Day,” there are several different states and cities that claim to have founded the national holiday. However, in 1966 president Lyndon Johnson declared the birthplace of Memorial Day to be Waterloo, New York. He stated that it was “difficult” to prove the origins of the day with certainty.
Aside from the birthplace of the day one thing is certain, Memorial Day came to existence as a result of the Civil War. General John A. Logan
stated in a General Order that “The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing flowers, or otherwise decorating graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion.” Thus creating the Memorial Day we know and celebrate to this day. So to all those enjoying their three day weekend, make sure to remember the people that have changed our lives so greatly.
