Beginning May 18th, Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey will be returning to theatres to commemorate its 50th Anniversary. Stanley Kubrick is known for his ability to capture beautiful scenes in a way that was well ahead of its time. Most people would recognize his work in The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, A Clockwork Orange, or even the conspiracy theory that he helped fake the moon landings. After watching trailers for 2001: A Space Odyssey, it is easy to see how some would come to think such a thing. I was shocked to learn that the movie was released in 1968.
With that being said, the movie that is being deemed the Interstellar of the 20th Century will be shown in theatres once again starting May 18th through the 29th. Then again, perhaps Interstellar is the 2001: A Space Odyssey of the 21st Century since Christopher Nolan expresses its heavy influence and lasting impression it made on him. After all the recommendations and hype, I am more than excited to see Stanley Kubrick’s revolutionary film in 70mm print in a theatre just as audiences did fifty years ago.
