CHICAGO — Statement from A. Gabriel Esteban, Ph.D., president of DePaul University, on the passing of Richard H. Driehaus.

“It is with deep sadness that my wife Jo and I have just learned of the passing of our dear friend and DePaul alumnus, Richard Driehaus. Richard was an inspirational member of the DePaul University community who devoted so much of his life’s focus to the university and our students. His was the quintessential DePaul story – a son of the South Side of Chicago who learned the value of work early as a newspaper delivery boy.

“His pragmatic approach was forged in his Catholic values, education at neighborhood parochial schools, and his strong family life. His inquisitive mind, relentless determination, and unquenchable desire to learn led him to unparalleled levels of success in the investment management industry, which in turn spurred his outsized effect on countless individuals and organizations as a philanthropist. In 2012, DePaul was very proud to rename its College of Commerce the Richard H. Driehaus College of Business in recognition of the remarkable commitments he made to DePaul University and the larger business community.

“Jo and I extend our deepest condolences, thoughts and prayers to Richard’s family. We wish to grant his family the privacy and peace they deserve at this most difficult time, and look forward to celebrating his extraordinary life at a future date.”
