CHICAGO — DePaul University announces that Kathryn Stieber was appointed by the board of trustees as secretary of the university, effective July 1. Stieber also assumes the role of vice president and general counsel on that date, an appointment made recently by DePaul President A. Gabriel Esteban, Ph.D.
Stieber has served as assistant university secretary since 2019 and as deputy general counsel since 2007. She regularly provides university leadership with counsel and crisis management assistance in the areas of employment, contracts, compliance and litigation, as well as other legal issues affecting higher education. She served as interim vice president for Human Resources in 2012 and first joined DePaul's Office of General Counsel in 2005.
The Office of the Secretary oversees the fulfillment of legal requirements for reporting and record keeping for DePaul, the nation’s largest Catholic university with more than 22,000 students. The Office of the Secretary manages the work of the board of trustees and the members of the corporation to facilitate their services to the university.
In announcing her appointment, Esteban said: “Throughout her time at DePaul, Kathy has demonstrated a consistent talent for leading in a diverse range of areas at the university, all the while providing excellent counsel based on her extensive legal experience. I am grateful for her willingness to serve as general counsel, and I look forward to working closely with her as DePaul continues to deliver our students a transformative education, grounded in our Catholic and Vincentian values."
Stieber has a J.D. from the Southern Methodist University School of Law in Dallas. She earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.
Prior to her legal work at DePaul, Stieber was a labor and employment associate at Jones Day in Dallas. She also served as a judicial clerk for U.S. Magistrate Judge Jane J. Boyle in Dallas.
“I am very grateful for this opportunity to serve the university in a new capacity and to lead the outstanding teams in the Office of the General Counsel and the Office of the Secretary," Stieber said. “Both offices are dedicated to supporting the university in its vision to be unequaled among urban universities in the United States, ensuring the success of a diverse community of leaders."
Stieber's appointments follow the May 27 announcement that José Padilla is leaving DePaul to serve as vice president, general counsel and secretary to the board of regents at the University of Colorado. Padilla has served as DePaul's general counsel since 2005 and secretary of the university since 2019.
