Flashback to 2005!

20th Anniversary Flashback - COOL Conference

This month we flashback to Fall 2005 and a story about six Steans Center students, along with seven other DePaul students and two staff members, attending the Campus Outreach Opportunity League (COOL)/Actions Without Borders conference at the University of California at Berkeley.  Conferences continue to feature strongly in the Steans Center community engagement toolbox.  The Steans Center students, staff and faculty promote community service and social justice with conference work throughout the year, partnering with universities and organizations from around the world.  Upcoming events featured in this newsletter include the ABCD Institute UnConference September 21-22, and the ACU/DePaul Online Conference on Community Engagement & Service Learning October 4-6, which partner with organizations in New Zealand and Australia, respectively.  Read more about these conferences and more in the articles below.  And save the date - May 20 - for our annual Service Speaks conference!

Australian Catholic University with DePaul University will host an online Conference on Community Engagement and Service Learning:  Pandemic, Pivots and Potentials. October 4-6 (USA) / 5-7 (AUS) 2021

Our 2021 conference aims to explore the current ‘state of play’ for universities in responding to the challenges and opportunities for service-learning and university-community engagement in a ‘post-COVID’ world while taking the time to reflect on the responses and learnings from the efforts of the field during the pandemic.
Registration for the conference is FREE.

Final call for abstracts

We are pleased to announce a second and final call for the submission of abstracts for presentations related to the praxis, research, and scholarship of community engagement and service-learning.  Abstracts are to be limited to 250 words and presentations will be 20 minutes in duration.

Submissions close:

  • USA - 9 am (CDT) Friday 10 September 2021
  • AUS - Midnight (AEST) Saturday 11 September 2021

We encourage presentations that relate to one or more of the following themes (although this is not exhaustive):

  • Service-Learning and community engagement in a Post-COVID world.
  • Pivoting community engagement and service-learning: Success stories, challenges, and learnings.
  • Online service-learning and community engagement.
  • Innovation in service-learning and community engagement.
  • Research and scholarship in service-learning and community engagement.
  • Advancing service-learning and community engagement: Challenges and opportunities.

Given the online format we favour presentations that:

  • Involve academic/partner/student triads or dyads (i.e., presenting together).
  • Utilise technology to engage participants.
  • Aim for a 50/50 present/discussion-questions format to allow interaction.
