Service work is anything but novel to Marcelle Owona, as her interest in volunteering sparked in elementary school carried on through high school and into her junior year of college where she worked with Lakeview Pantry.
“Over the summer, Lakeview Pantry moved into Wrigley Field and I donated my time to stuffing grocery packages for people coming in and I learned a lot about why I liked Lakeview Pantry and why so many people, whether volunteers or clients connect to them. People continually are going above and beyond for others and that makes you want to do the same.
From all of my experiences volunteering, I learned a lot about the importance of personal connection and what healthy environments within communities and nonprofit spaces are. As I volunteered around Chicago, I realized that there is still a lot of work to do in fixing Chicago as a system but there are organizations all across the city in every area of the city doing everything from food kitchens, to community gardens. The stories I have heard from all of the places I volunteer have helped shape my mindset and give me excitement to meet more people and hear their stories.“
Thanks for your service, Marcelle!
