June 21, 11 a.m. - ABCD Sharing Stories: Using ABCD as a Pedagogical Tool in a Project-based Learning Course
The Steans Center is pleased to announce the addition of Kayla Sims as our new Community Service Scholarship Coordinator. Kayla is a Chicago Native, a former Blue Demon with a master's from the University of Chicago, and a former CPS middle school math teacher. Currently, Kayla also works for True Star Media running a youth-led anti-violence campaign and designing their youth influencer program. When not working, Kayla is mother to an incredible four-year-old boy named Kynd (pronounce liked kind). Some of her favorite things include: Anything music, anything Shonda Rhimes, anything Earth-toned, anything for the people.

Open Mic Poetry at Leo High School
On Tuesday, May 24, 13 DePaul students from Jen Finstrom's WRD 371 class traveled to Leo High School in Auburn-Gresham for an all-school open mic poetry performance with Leo and DePaul students. Leo Juniors also met separately with DePaul students for a symposium on the importance of writing. Students from both schools praised the event and everyone is looking forward to meeting again. Congratulations, WRD 371 on a great event!
Service Speaks 2022
Congratulations to everyone who participated in this year's Service Speaks conference. It was exciting to meet once again in person and the energy and spirit of the event was palpable. More than 40 students presented their service in morning sessions. Lunch was followed by an inspiring keynote address from Mikki Kendall.
Thank you to everyone at Steans-Egan-ABCD who made this event possible, coordinating, timing, encouraging and participating. Particular thanks go to Hyelee Won and the organizing committee for producing such a fabulous event.
Collaboratory in Action
Collaboratory at DePaul is creating a space for faculty, staff and students to tell their community engagement stories while building a culture of community engagement data collection and use in a variety of different ways. The multi-faceted approach better aligns DePaul’s image and spirit of community engagement and public service in institutional planning, accreditation and cross-institutional initiatives. All faculty and staff involved in institution-related community engagement and public service are invited to contribute their engagement information to Collaboratory at DePaul.
Collaboratory is easy for you to use -- to get started, log-in using your campus connect password at https://he.cecollaboratory.com/depaul. Once you have logged in the first time, you can create your personal profile, begin contributing community engagement or public service activities, invite a proxy to create an activity on your behalf, and invite your faculty/staff partners to also join Collaboratory. You only need to enter your data once a term.

Using ABCD as a Pedagogical Tool in a Project-Based Learning Course
June 21, 11 a.m. (1 - 1.5 hours)
This session shares the experiences of a project-based learning course that sought to design a young black leaders academy in Niagara Falls, New York. To create an all-new youth academy from scratch requires a broad and diverse set of skills (e.g., business plan development, marketing, web design, etc.) that, even collectively as a class, we do not possess. Therefore, the students have to use their own assets and networks to seek out the gifts of their friends, colleagues, and others in their networks. As the students learn the principles and practices of Asset-Based Community Development, they have to put these into action in order to meet the learning objectives of the course.

Community-based Research Faculty Fellowships:
Call for Proposals
The Steans Center for Community-based Service Learning will award up to two Community-based Research Faculty Fellowships for the 2022–2023 academic year. Each Fellow receives a $4,000 stipend (in three installments) and a funded research assistant for three consecutive academic quarters. Community partners receive a $1,000 stipend as a collaborator in the research process. Funds also will be provided for each Fellow and their research assistant or community partner to present at an approved academic conference of their choice.
A fellowship can be proposed by DePaul University faculty who are tenured, tenure-track, or full-time contract faculty with ongoing teaching responsibilities. Adjunct instructors are not eligible. Fellowship applications are encouraged from any discipline or academic profession and research is defined through the faculty member’s discipline.
Senior Faculty Fellowship. Past fellowship recipients may apply to be a senior fellow. Dates and criteria for the senior fellowship are the same as for first-time applicants.
