EFECT Launch

The Egan Family Engagement and Coalition Initiative (EFECT) team welcomed 30 North and South Lawndale families to its third cohort on March 28, 2023. EFECT provides a safe space for families to come together, share their stories, learn about topics of importance to them and connect with community resources. This year families will learn from DePaul faculty and community leaders on a broad range of subjects such as Asset Based Community Development (ABCD), coalition building, and financial literacy. The sessions run once a week in the Spring quarter and are held in schools, community partner sites, and at DePaul University. This initiative is possible thanks to the generous support of Kathy and John Schreiber and the Napolitano Family.

Curiosity and Creativity in the City: Enhancing Student Learning Through Chicago-based Research

We are thrilled to announce our third instance of the biennial Chicago Research Summit happening this fall and invite you to propose a program for the one-day online Summit on October 20, 2023.

Please consider proposing a program and sharing this notice with your colleagues and friends. Over 100 librarians, faculty, and others attended the 2021 Summit. Your contributions will make it possible once again to share and explore ways to empower undergraduate students with Chicago-based research experiences.

We are seeking presenters across disciplines to lead engaging and stimulating sessions that illustrate how they are using Chicago-based research pedagogy to enhance undergraduate student learning. We are also interested in sessions that share research, institutional best practices, successful programs, assignments, coursework, and creative approaches to this method of instruction. Lastly, we encourage representatives from Chicago area museums, cultural institutions, and community organizations to submit proposals that highlight their services, resources, and collections. We encourage submissions of presentations or panels that relate to the theme of “Curiosity and Creativity in the City” including own-voice narratives, oral histories, creative projects, or other approaches.

Areas of interest include:
• Engaging Undergraduate learners
• Inspiring Student Creatives
• Pedagogical Approaches to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
• Program Administration and Evaluation
• Community Partnerships
• Exploring Chicago’s Archival Collections
• Discovering Chicago’s Hidden Stories
All sessions and talks will be virtual.

The deadline for submitting proposals is June 15, 2023. Presenters will be notified in early August 2023 of their proposal status.

Opening Night Reception with Rebecca Makkai
This year, the Chicago Research Summit is offering an additional opportunity to connect and learn! Acclaimed author Rebecca Makkai will be our guest on October 5, 2023 for an in-person reception at Columbia College Chicago where she will discuss her Chicago-based research for The Great Believers. Join the Chicago Research Summit email list to stay in touch and receive more information about this opportunity as details become available.

In this virtual event series, hear from outstanding scholars, leaders, and practitioners about their work and the journeys that brought them to where they are today.
The speakers, who are winners of this year’s Campus Compact Impact Awards and the 2022 IARSLCE Awards, have each been recognized for outstanding contributions to higher education civic and community engagement. Join us in celebrating their accomplishments and exploring new and innovative approaches to our shared work.

Click here to register.  Sessions begin June 6 at 3PM Eastern!
