Panopto Help for Students

Downloading Panopto and Recording a Video

Use these instructions if you want to use the Panopto recorder to create your video content. If you want to upload a video to the Panopto assignment folder that was created using a different platform, see Uploading Your Video to Panopto below.

  1. Log into D2L.
  2. Navigate to the course in which you will be using Panopto.
  3. Navigate to the Panopto Recordings link and click on the link.

  4. You will be taken to your course's Panopto folder. Look for the assignments folder at the top of the page. It is marked with a red asterisk, and will also be labeled Name of course - [assignments] when you hover over it with your cursor. Click on the folder to open it.

  5. At the top of the page, click on Create to release a menu of options.
  6. Choose Record a new session.

  7. Click Download Panopto to download the Panopto recorder. If the incorrect download option is provided, choose the Click here for other download options link. 
  8. Follow the instructions for installation.
  9. Once the Panopto recorder has been installed on your computer, choose Open Panopto or Launch Panopto (depending on your current screen).

  10. The Panopto recorder has launched. Check that the Name of course - [assignments] is the folder selected within the Folder menu.

  11. Begin recording. Panopto's website contains tutorials on recording with Windows or Mac computers.
  12. When you have finished recording, choose the Upload button to upload your video to the course’s Panopto assignment folder. Once you've uploaded the video, Panopto will immediately start processing it. When it is finished processing your instructor will have access to the video.

Note: If you have previously downloaded the Panopto recorder, then you can skip steps 7-8.

Uploading Your Video to Panopto

  1. Log into D2L.
  2. Navigate to the course in which you will be using Panopto.
  3. Navigate to the Panopto Recordings link and click on the link.

  4. You will be taken to your course's Panopto folder. Look for the assignments folder at the top of the page. It is marked with a red asterisk, and will also be labeled Name of course - [assignments] when you hover over it with your cursor. Click on the folder to open it.

  6. Choose Upload Media.

  7. Click Choose video or audio files. 
  8. Browse your computer and upload the file. Once you've uploaded the video, Panopto will immediately start processing it. When it is finished processing your instructor will have access to the video.

If Your Video is for Your Whole Class to See

Downloading Panopto and Recording a Video

  1. Log into D2L.
  2. Navigate to the course in which you will be using Panopto.
  3. Navigate to the Discussions area of the course by choosing Discussions from the top navigation bar.
  4. Locate the discussion associated with your Panopto presentation. Click on the name of the discussion topic in order to open the discussion.
  5. Click the Start a New Thread button.

  6. Choose the Insert Stuff button within the text editor.

  7. Choose Panopto Insert Stuff from the left list.

  8. Choose the Record tab.
  9. Select the Click here to download link.

  10. A new tab should open in your internet browser. Choose the appropriate version of the Panopto recorder installer based on your computer model and operating system by choosing one of the Download Installer buttons.

  11. Follow the instructions for downloading the Panopto recorder.
  12. When you have finished installing the Panopto recorder, navigate back to the internet browser tab in which the D2L discussion and “Panopto Insert Stuff” window are open.
  13. Enter a name for your recording in the Enter a name field.
  14. Select the Record button.

  15. Your computer will prompt you to launch the Panopto recorder. Launch the Panopto recorder.
  16. The Panopto recorder will launch, and you can begin your recording. Panopto's website contains tutorials on recording with Windows or Mac computers.
  17. When you have finished recording, choose the Upload button to upload your video to the course’s Panopto folder.

Note: If you have previously downloaded the Panopto recorder, then you can skip steps 9-12.

Adding Your Panopto Recorded Video to the Discussion Board

Once you have completed your recording and uploaded it to your course’s Panopto folder, you are ready to embed the video in the D2L discussion. This is how other students and your instructor will view your Panopto video.

  1. Log into D2L.
  2. Navigate to the course in which you will be using Panopto.
  3. Navigate to the Discussions area of the course by choosing Discussions from the top navigation bar. 
  4. Locate the discussion associate with your Panopto presentation. Click on the name of the discussion topic in order to open the discussion.
  5. Click the Start a New Thread button.

  6. Choose the Insert Stuff button within the text editor.

  7. Choose Panopto Insert Stuff from the left list.

  8. Navigate to the Choose tab.

    NOTE: If you did not use the Panopto recorder to record your video, you will want to use the separate guide found below titled “Uploading and Adding a Video to Panopto and the D2L Discussion.”

  9. Select your video from the list.

  10. Choose the Insert button in the lower right corner.

  11. If you do not see the Insert button in the lower right corner, you may need to make your window bigger by moving the right scroll bar down.

  12. Choose the Insert button in the lower left corner.

  13. Add any necessary text to your discussion thread and give it a title within the Enter a subject field.
  14. Hit Post.

  15. You should be automatically subscribed to the thread, so you will be notified when your classmates respond or pose questions. To manage your subscriptions click on the dropdown to the right of your name in the upper right-hand corner of D2L and choose Notifications.

Adding Your Non-Panopto Recorded Video to the Discussion Board

If you recorded your video using a different platform, you will still need to upload your video through the D2L discussion and Panopto, but will do so in a slightly different way. Before beginning, be sure your video file is saved and accessible from your computer. 

  1. Log into D2L.
  2. Navigate to the course in which you will be using Panopto. 
  3. Navigate to the Discussions area of the course by choosing Discussions from the top navigation bar.
  4. Locate the discussion associate with your Panopto presentation. Click on the name of the discussion topic in order to open the discussion. 
  5. Click the Start a New Thread button.

  8. Navigate to the Upload tab.
  9. Click Choose video or audio files.

  10. Locate the file on your computer, and choose Open.
  11. As the file is uploading, you will see a progress bar.

  12. When the status of the upload is listed as “Processing,” choose the Insert button in the lower right corner.
  13. If you do not see the Insert button in the lower right corner, you may need to make your window bigger by dragging the corner.
  14. Choose the Insert button in the lower left corner.

  15. Add any necessary text to your discussion thread and give it a title within the Enter a subject field.
  16. Hit Post.

  17. You should be automatically subscribed to the thread, so you will be notified when your classmates respond or pose questions. To manage your subscriptions click on the dropdown to the right of your name in the upper right-hand corner of D2L and choose Notifications.
