Mindfulness and Asset-Based Community Development: An Innovative Approach
April 16, 2024, 11:30 am to 12:30 pm Central Time
Mindfulness and Asset-Based Community Development can be blended to foster powerful student learning, community building, collaboration for social justice, and tools for lifelong health. This interactive Story Session shares both mindful and strengths-based approaches that can be adopted at neighborhood, local, national, and international levels, as well as a focus on ABCD-N(ewer), i.e., how are ABCD relationships and practices evolving? Conversants will include a faculty member from DePaul University in Chicago piloting a quarter-long course on ABCD and mindfulness; her Community Partner, the founder of the youth program, Mindfulness Leader, in Chicago; the Senior Coordinator of the Educational Opportunity Center at the University of Pittsburgh; and a Community Service Scholar from DePaul who utilizes a strengths-based approach in his work in the neighborhood community center he grew up in. Participants will consider how established and newer practitioners are using ABCD in their community work, and reflect on their own as well.
Panelists:
- Helen Damon-Moore, Associate Director, Steans Center for Community-based Service Learning, DePaul University (Chicago)
- Mona Antwan, Founder, Mindfulness Leader (Chicago)
- Anika Jones, Senior Program Coordinator of the Educational Outreach Center, University of Pittsburgh (Pittsburgh)
- Mauz Durrani, DePaul '24, Finance Major, Community Studies Minor (Chicago)
