University operations during Chicago summer events

Dear Faculty, Staff, and Students,

As we approach the end of the spring quarter, we want to keep you informed about how DePaul is preparing for significant events that will take place in the City of Chicago this summer.

Events
Event: NASCAR Street Race
Date: July 6-7
Location: In and around Grant Park

Event: Lollapalooza
Date: Aug. 1-4
Location: Grant Park

Event: Democratic National Convention
Date: Aug. 19-22
Location: McCormick Place, United Center, delegate accommodations throughout Chicago, satellite events throughout Chicago

Street closures and traffic
The NASCAR race and Lollapalooza will have the most significant impact on our Loop Campus during summer session classes due to street closures and increased traffic and crowds around campus.

While official DNC activities aren’t located as close to campus, delegate accommodations and satellite events will be scattered throughout the city. This activity could introduce additional street and sidewalk closures, parking restrictions and increased congestion on public transportation.

Flexibility
Overall, we ask that our faculty, staff and students be flexible this summer. Academic Affairs is already reaching out to faculty teaching classes during the summer session about relocating Loop classes to Lincoln Park during peak times.

Managers in the Loop should consider temporary, flexible work accommodations. If in-person meetings must be held, hold them in Lincoln Park if possible.

Finally, if you come to the Loop during these times, use public transportation, but note that buses and trains will have higher than typical usage and buses are subject to the traffic and congestion that comes with street closures. If you must drive, be aware of street closures, parking restrictions and increased traffic. Whether you drive or use public transit, build in more time for your commute.

More specific information and updates will be shared with the university community as we get closer to the dates of each of these events.

We’re excited to be part of a city that is host to so many engaging events and hope our university community takes advantage of everything Chicago has to offer this summer.

Sincerely,

Sherri Sidler
