Dear Students,
As we approach the end of the year, we want to take a moment to acknowledge the difficult reality we are facing, not only as an institution, but as a city and a world. We want to share what this means for DePaul and for you.
Like many universities, DePaul is experiencing financial challenges due to a drop in international graduate enrollment, increased demand for financial aid, and rising benefit costs. To meet our financial obligations, we made reductions in staffing and operating expenses.
What this means for our community
Last week, 114 of our 1,493 full-time and part-time staff concluded their service at DePaul. These difficult decisions were made with care, and we are providing severance, career counseling, and health insurance subsidies to support them. Faculty positions were not affected, and we worked to limit cuts to student-facing services and on-campus jobs. Please note there have been changes to hours at both libraries. Both remain open and you can find
more information here.
We will share more about these changes in the new year, but please know supporting you and providing an excellent education remain our highest priorities.
Our commitment to your safety and belonging
Amid these challenges and the recent violence at Brown University, MIT, in Australia and beyond, we are committed to your education and wellbeing. We know these tragedies affect members of our community in different ways.
We reaffirm our commitment to safety and belonging through campus resources like Public Safety, Student Affairs, and Mission and Ministry. We are working with the Student Government Association to identify safety enhancements on our campus. If you need support—emotional, academic, or practical—
please reach out. We are here for you and will share more ways for us to be in community with one another when we’re back on campus in January.
Coming together as a community
Our Catholic, Vincentian values guide us to act with compassion and care. In the new year, we’ll share opportunities to come together as a community to listen, support, and strengthen the bonds that make DePaul special.
As you enjoy winter break, we hope you find time to rest and renew. We look forward to welcoming you back in January with hope and purpose. Thank you for being part of this community.
Warm regards,
