Chicago Police investigating Nov. 6 incident as hate crime

Dear Faculty, Staff, and Students,

We’re writing to share an update from the Chicago Police Department regarding the incident that occurred yesterday on campus. The Chicago Police Department has classified the attack on two Jewish students as a hate crime. Again, we are outraged that this occurred on our campus and will do all we can to hold those responsible accountable for these hateful acts.

The university continues to actively work with police to investigate this incident.

ABOUT THE CRIME - BATTERY/HATE CRIME
This alert gives notice of a battery/hate crime that occurred in Lincoln Park within the 18th (Near North) District.

The Area Three Detective Division is seeking to identify the two pictured individuals in relation to the investigation.

During this incident, an offender verbally engaged the victim and made anti-Semitic remarks before repeatedly striking the victim.

INCIDENT DATES AND LOCATIONS
2300 block of N. Sheffield Ave. (Lincoln Park)

OFFENDER DESCRIPTION
  • ​Offender #1 - Male, approx. 20-years-old, Height: 5'08 - 5'11, Weight: 150 - 170, full beard, short dark hair with shaved sides. Last seen wearing a black t-shirt, black pants, black shoes.
  • Offender #2 - Male, approx. 20-years-old, Height: 5'10 - 6'00, Weight: 150 - 170. Last seen wearing a black balaclava covering his face, white t-shirt, and khaki pants
WHAT YOU CAN DO
  • ​Always be aware of your surroundings
  • Dial 9-1-1 to report suspicious activity immediately
  • Never pursue a fleeing assailant
  • Provide the information to the police
