More details on Student Health Insurance Plan

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,

As a part of our Designing DePaul initiative, we are committed to offering affordable health care to all of DePaul’s undergraduate and graduate students. Announced last September, all degree-seeking undergraduate and graduate students will be required to have active health coverage beginning in the 2024-2025 academic year. Students will be automatically enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan and will have the choice to opt-out if they provide proof of active health care coverage.

We are happy to provide more details about the insurance plan so students and their families can make an informed decision about coverage. DePaul is working with UnitedHealthcare to offer a PPO (preferred provider organization) Plan. The highlights of plan include:

  • The rate for the health insurance plan will be $800 per quarter or $1,200 per semester.
  • Each plan will cover students for a full calendar year and offer a wide range of services.
  • Coverage will be available to all degree-seeking students regardless of immigration status, place of residence, country of origin or past medical history.
  • Coverage rates for common health needs, including urgent care visits, preventative care and prescriptions, can be found on this flyer

The Student Health Insurance Advisory Committee completed a rigorous request for proposal process in which licensed providers in Illinois submitted competitive packages. The committee held interviews with all of the providers to determine which met our goals of coverage and cost and identified UnitedHealthcare’s PPO plan as the most comprehensive and affordable option. DePaul then worked with an insurance broker, AHP, to aggressively further negotiate for the best possible rate for our students, which is well below the average monthly premium in Illinois.

More information about the Student Health Insurance Plan is on the Office of Health Promotion and Wellness website. We will share more soon about the timeline and instructions for the waiver (opt-out) period.

As we move this initiative forward, we strive to support students’ academic success and wellbeing. We will continue to post updates to the Student Health Insurance page of the Designing DePaul website. In the meantime, we encourage all students with questions to email studentinsurance@depaul.edu.

Thank you,
