Student Health Insurance: What’s changing for the 2024-2025 academic year?

DePaul’s commitment to supporting students’ academic success and wellbeing is ongoing, and we continually explore ways to address evolving needs. Focusing on student health insurance, a Designing DePaul initiative, emphasizes the importance of access to affordable health insurance coverage. Beginning with the 2024-2025 academic year, DePaul will offer all degree-seeking undergraduate and graduate students access to a comprehensive and competitive health insurance plan.

As I shared this past September, the university took action based on feedback from the student community, the Student Health Insurance Task Force and Student Health Insurance Advisory Committee.

What’s changing for the 2024-2025 academic year?
  • All degree-seeking students (part-time and full-time, undergraduate and graduate, and international) will be required to have active health coverage.
  • Those who have active coverage in fall 2024—such as an individual plan or through a parent’s or guardian’s plan—will be able to opt out of the Student Health Insurance Plan with proof of active insurance.
  • The Student Health Insurance Plan will be effective beginning fall 2024.
  • The plan will be reasonably priced at $800.00 per quarter / $1,200.00 per semester and provide coverage comparable to other premium insurance plans on the market.
  • Premium payments will be made on a quarterly basis and provide coverage for 12 full months. Law students paying for this plan will do so on a semesterly payment schedule.
What do you need to do?
No action is required at this time.

What's next?
  • We will communicate frequently and clearly to ensure students and families are aware of the requirement.
  • We will provide details about rates, plan benefits, coverage, billing and more in the coming months.
  • We will also provide directions for students with active insurance coverage to opt-out of paying for the Student Health Insurance Plan. Ample time will be provided to complete the opt-out process.
  • DePaul will automatically enroll any degree-seeking student in the student health insurance plan. The student will be responsible for providing the active insurance documentation to opt-out by the deadline. Upon approval the charges would be removed.
What about the Student Health Services Fee?
DePaul students living in our residential facilities, except for the University Center, will continue to pay the Student Health Services fee. It will be paid quarterly along with their housing fees.

As we move this initiative forward, we strive to support all students’ success and wellbeing for the best DePaul experience. You can learn more about the Student Health Insurance initiative on the Designing DePaul website. please send an email to studentinsurance@depaul.edu with any questions.
