Facility Policies

  • Food and beverages are permitted only in the Atrium and vending areas. Water in closed plastic containers is permitted in all other areas of the facility.
  • Injuries, accidents, or equipment failures must be reported to the Building Manager. In the event of a serious injury, press a duress alarm for medical attention and seek assistance from a staff member.
  • The Department of Campus Recreation is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Personal belongings are not permitted in activity areas and must be kept in a locker.
  • Please consult a physician prior to engaging in physical activity. The Department of Campus Recreation is not responsible for accidents or injuries that occur due to the nature of the activity.
  • Non-marking athletic shoes are required in all wood courts and fitness studios; close-toed shoes required in other activity areas.
  • Mature and respectful conduct is expected and required at all times.
  • Any unwarranted physical contact or verbal abuse of a staff member or a patron will not be tolerated.
  • Only personal trainers and instructors approved by the Campus Recreation professional staff are allowed to provide services in the facility.
  • Use of the facility for commercial gain (such as to conduct private instruction or training of others) is prohibited.
  • Usage of cell phones in the locker rooms or bathrooms is strictly prohibited. Misuse of cell phones in any area of the facility may result in removal from the facility and revocation of privileges.
  • Examples of misuse include, but are not limited to:
    • Loud or inappropriate cell phone conversations
    • Photography or video recording of members without expressed permission
  • Due to private membership, any photography or videotaping that takes place in the facility must be authorized by Ray Meyer Fitness and Recreation Center administration. Unauthorized photography and videotaping are not allowed.
  • Examples of formal photography or videotaping include but are not limited to:
    • Photos and videos for class projects.
    • Photos and videos used for unauthorized promotional material.
    • Photos and videos used in the creation of short films and movies
    • Animals are not allowed in the facility except for the express purpose of assisting or aiding persons with disabilities
    • All patrons must comply with staff directives. The Campus Recreation staff has authority regarding facility conduct and use of equipment as well as in all emergency situations. Failure to comply may result in suspension or termination of Ray Meyer Fitness and Recreation Center privileges.
    • Damage to property and verbal or physical abuse is not tolerated; violators will be escorted out of the facility and subject to disciplinary action.

All patrons are required to show their DePaul student ID or Campus Recreation key tag. Showing proper identification to the Entrance Attendant (or using The Ray app) are the only acceptable methods of proving your membership status.

Campus Recreation allows a one-time exception every quarter to accommodate patrons who do not have their ID with them. However, verifying information without a student ID or key tag requires considerable time. To accommodate all of our users in a timely fashion, student IDs and key tags need to be scanned, as this is the most time efficient manner to check in.

Students who have lost their ID must get a replacement ID from ID Services before they can use the facility. ID services will no longer issue a temporary student ID. Members who have lost their key tag can purchase a replacement for $10.

  • Food and non-alcoholic beverages are permitted.
  • The big screen television is available for everyone's use. Volume and channel control can be adjusted per request at Equipment Issue. Television program selection is on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • The television may not display programs that may be offensive.  This includes violent or profane programs.
  • Chess, Checkers, Backgammon, Jenga, Yahtzee, board games, and playing cards are available at Equipment Issue.
  • Two table tennis tables, shuffleboard and a foosball table are available. Paddles for table tennis, shuffleboard equipment, and foosballs may be checked out at Equipment Issue.

Children 15 years and younger:

  • Children 15 years old and younger must be accompanied by an adult over 18 at all times while in the facility.
  • While DePaul is in academic session, children’s access is limited to Monday - Thursday, 9 AM - Noon, and Friday/Saturday/Sunday, all open hours.
  • During DePaul academic breaks (summer months and spring/winter breaks), children accompanied by adult members are allowed the same access as their adult guardians. (For instance, during academic breaks, children of Blue Members may access the facility during Blue Members hours).

Escort/Supervision Policy:

  • Children must show their non-member access card or key tag to access the facility.
  • Children 15 years old and younger are required to be supervised at all times by a parent/guardian member unless they are in a paid program.
  • Children 15 years old and younger are not allowed on the second floor unless pre-approved through a registered program or special rental.
  • Children must be escorted to/from the scheduled program by their parent/guardian. The parent/guardian must remain in the facility while the class is in session.
  • Children 17 years old and younger whose parents are not members may use the facility if they are sponsored as guests, pay the guest fee, and are supervised by the sponsoring member at all times.

Locker Room Access Restrictions for Children/Dependents:

  • Children 3 years old and younger can use any locker room. Must be supervised.
  • Children 4 years old and older can only use same-gender locker room or assisted change/unisex locker room. Must be supervised.
  • Children 7 years old and older may use the locker room unsupervised, but the supervising adult should wait immediately outside locker room.
  • The Assisted Change/Unisex Locker Room is located down the hallway to the pool.

Caregiver Policy:

  • Caregivers may escort member's children to and from paid programs. Caregivers must wait on the pool deck or in the atrium during the program.
  • Caregivers must have their own membership to supervise other members' children during children's hours or to use The Ray. As a courtesy, a caregiver may be given the option to pay the member-sponsored guest fee if supervising a child registered to an active membership account.

Requests for volleyball, badminton, or soccer equipment set-up will be accommodated when possible. Make request to the Entrance Attendant when checking in. The Building Manager will be notified to assess the request.

Gymnasium Policies

  • The gymnasium is primarily intended for basketball, volleyball, pickleball and badminton.
  • Other activities are permissible if considered safe and appropriate as determined by the Campus Recreation staff.
  • Baseball and softball related activities are not permitted on the courts.
  • Courts are prioritized for informal recreation, intramural sports and club sports.
  • A minimum of one court is always available for informal recreation.
  • Shirts and athletic, non-marking shoes that cover and support the entire foot are required.
  • Basketball games are played to 15 points (scoring ones and twos); winning teams may remain on the court.
  • Hanging on nets or rims is prohibited.
  • Keep courts clear of bags and clothing. Lockers and cubbies are available on the third floor free of charge.
  • No food or beverages are allowed on the courts except water in closed plastic containers.
  • Only personal trainers and instructors approved by the Campus Recreation professional staff are allowed to provide services in the facility.
  • Use of the facility for commercial gain (such as to conduct private instruction or training of others) is prohibited.
  • For your safety and security, this area is under video surveillance.

Racquetball Court Policies

  • Reservations may be made 48 hours in advance via phone (773-325-4560), in-person at equipment issue, or online.
  • Reservations are held for a maximum of ten minutes.
  • Eye guards are recommended.
  • Closed toe, non-marking athletic shoes are required.

  • Only one court may be reserved per person per day.
  • Reservations are limited to one hour.
  • Reservations are held for a maximum of ten minutes.
  • Patrons who have reserved the court may check out a wallyball set and ask for assistance in putting up a wallyball net on the court.
  • If a court is not in use for racquetball, the following policies apply: 1) Use for group dance or exercise is limited to three individuals; use by more than three requires a formal rental (check Facility Rental page for application). 2) Use of fitness or exercise instruction external to Ray programs, including the use of computer-aided or DVD-aided instruction, is restricted to no more than three individuals, including an instructor.
  • During Spring Quarter a netted golf driving range will be set up on court 3 on Thursday from 8:30-11:30 pm and Friday from 5:30 am - 1 pm. This is for drop-in use. Used clubs will be provided but patrons may bring their own.

All Group Fitness classes are free to DePaul students and Campus Rec members. Specialty Programs require registration and may include a fee.

  • If the room is in use prior to your class starting, you may line up. However, there is no saving space in line for friends.
  • Soft-soled, closed-toe athletic shoes are required for all cardiovascular and resistance training classes. Hard-soled, cycling shoes are appropriate for cycling classes.
  • All equipment must remain in the studios and must be returned to its proper location after use. Equipment from other areas may not be brought into the studios. All equipment should be used in the manner for which it is designed.
  • Studios A, B, and D are available for stretching or other non-obtrusive activity when not specifically scheduled for a Campus Recreation program or rental. However, the only music that may be used by "drop-ins" is personal listening devices with headphones.
  • Studio stereos may NOT be used. The Cycle Studio and Studio C are available for formal programs ONLY and NOT for drop-in usage.
  • For drop-in usage involving groups, the following policies apply: 1) Use for group dance or exercise is limited to three individuals; use by more than three requires a formal rental (check Facility Rental page for application). 2) Use of fitness or exercise instruction external to Ray programs, including the use of computer-aided or DVD-aided instruction, is restricted to no more than three individuals, including an instructor.
  • Campus Recreation reserves the right to cancel any class on the basis of low attendance or registration.
  • All participants in Group Fitness classes on the second floor must be 16 years of age or older; Teens aged 13 and older may accompany a parent or guardian to a class on the 3rd or 4th floors.
  • Personal belongings (such as bags or coats) are not allowed in the studios. Temporary lockers are located on the second and third floors near the studios and daily lockers are available from Equipment Issue. Campus Recreation staff is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
  • Appropriate athletic attire is recommended.

Group Fitness Recommendations

  • Participants are encouraged to arrive at class on time and stay for the entire class.
  • Water bottles are recommended for cycling classes.
  • Participants are encouraged to wipe down mats after usage; Gym Wipes are available outside studios.
  • Daily lockers may not be used to store items overnight. Personal locks will be cut off and discarded and items will be confiscated.
  • Locker service is provided with DePaul ID, key tag or filling out a locker checkout form.
  • If the key is lost, the replacement fee is $10. This fee must be paid prior to receipt of confiscated items.
  • All contents removed from daily lockers and rented lockers will be held for 30 days; unclaimed items will be given to charity.
  • Rental lockers are available; inquire at the membership desk.
  • All lockers must be renewed by the end of each quarter or they will be cleaned out and re-issued. Items cleared from expired lockers will be kept for 30 days; unclaimed items will be given to charity.
  • Towel service is provided to all members.  Shower towels are available at Equipment Issue; fitness towels are available at the Fitness Supervisor station on the second floor. Used towels are to be returned to designated towel bins.
  • Usage of cell phones in the locker rooms or bathrooms is strictly prohibited.

Locker Room Access for Children/Dependents

  • Children aged 3 and under can use any locker room. Must be supervised.
  • Children aged 4 and over can only use same gender locker room or assisted change/unisex locker room. Must be supervised.
  • Children aged 7 and over can use same gender locker room unsupervised, but the supervising adult should wait immediately outside locker room.

Assisted Change/Unisex Locker Room

The Assisted Change/Unisex Locker Room contains daily lockers, shower, restroom amenities, and infant changing table. This room is intended for:
  • Patrons with young children or with multiple children
  • Patrons in need of special assistance
  • Patrons who are uncomfortable in gender-defined locker rooms/restrooms
  • Patrons desiring a higher level of privacy

For questions about how to use the strength and conditioning areas, we offer free Fitness Orientations and New Equipment Workshops. Ask any fitness floor supervisor for a tour or inquire at the front desk.

  • All participants must be 16 years of age or older to use fitness equipment such as strength and cardiovascular machines.
  • All Personal Trainers must be hired through the Campus Recreation.
  • Appropriate athletic attire is recommended; jeans and dress pants are also allowed.
  • When using any equipment that requires prolonged contact with the user's torso, such as a weight bench or recumbent bike, a barrier (e.g. T-shirt or towel) should be placed between the patron and the equipment.
  • Closed-toed shoes are required; no sandals or open-toed shoes may be worn.
  • Patrons should use extreme caution in lifting weights to avoid any potential injuries to themselves or others.
  • All dumbbells and weights must be returned to the appropriate storage area after use.
  • Use of weight collars (clips) is required at all times.
  • Chalk is prohibited.
  • Water in a closed container is the only drink permitted. No food is permitted.
  • All patrons should wipe down the equipment with a gym-wipe or towel after use. Please be considerate to other patrons.
  • All equipment must be used in the manner for which it is designed. Do not attempt to modify equipment.
  • Standing on benches or equipment frames is prohibited.
  • Personal belongings must be kept in a locker. The staff is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
  • Spotters are recommended on all lifts.
  • Do not attempt to use equipment if unfamiliar with the proper use. Please seek Fitness Floor Supervisor for assistance.
  • Do not drop the weights. Also, do not prop the weights up against the walls, mirrors or pillars.
  • When using bumper plates, the barbell must always remain under control. Hands should stay in contact with the barbell until the barbell is below the lifter’s waist.
  • Top loading additional weight onto the weight stack machines is prohibited.
  • All equipment must remain in the area it was placed. Do not move equipment from one location to another.
  • Use of cardiovascular machines is limited to 30 minutes, if others are waiting.
  • Jog and walk no more than two abreast at all times.
  • Walkers should use inside lanes while joggers should use outside lanes.
  • Faster joggers have right of way and should pass on the outside lanes.
  • 8 laps/mile from the inside lane; 7 laps/mile from the outside lane.
  • Stretching areas are located in the north and south infields of the track. Please do not stand or stretch in the lanes.
  • DePaul Intercollegiate Track Teams have exclusive use of the track during posted times during the academic year.
  • The track direction changes daily; please follow the posted directional arrow.
  • Children under 16 years of age are not permitted to use fitness equipment.
  • Children under 16 years of age must be supervised by a guardian or adult member at all times.
