Photography and Video Principles
When considering a photo or video shoot featuring your college or school, contact your UBM liaison before you start production.
Consistent guidelines will inform all new photography and video, better representing DePaul’s unique people and programs.
- Showcase the diversity that is reflected in our community.
- Feature the various ways that students experience the Layered-Learning programs at DePaul.
- Show both professors interacting with students and students participating in immersive learning activities.
- Lighting should appear natural and appropriate for the activity.
- Pay special attention to the surroundings, keep the backgrounds clean and clutter-free.
- Wardrobe should avoid overly trendy clothes—we will use these images for a long time. Include accents of our core blue in the clothes and accessories. Steer clear of anything with other brand logos on it. Athletic wear can feature affinity marks or the DePaul academic logo.
- Ensure the demographic is appropriate for the program. Graduate students should look older than undergraduate students. Grad student may also be a bit more polished, wearing clothes appropriate for an office setting.
Videography Guidelines
Layered-Learning™ should be featured in any production for a college or school. When editing the video, ensure that you feature layered graphics, to further enhance the message. Use animated layered-learning treatments for graphics and use the college or school’s academic logo for video intros and outros.
All videos are required to have captions for ADA compliance. Open captioning is the best practice. We use YouTube to host many of our videos, and it is best practice to allow the bottom third for open captioning. Therefore, we recommend putting all titles and bullet points above the bottom third, so that you don’t see the captioning over other text and graphics.
