Stieber has served as deputy general counsel since 2007 and assistant university secretary since 2019. She regularly provides university leadership with counsel and crisis management assistance in the areas of employment, contracts, compliance and litigation, as well as numerous other legal issues affecting higher education. She served as interim vice president for Human Resources in 2012 and first joined DePaul's Office of General Counsel in 2005.

“Throughout her time at DePaul, Kathy has demonstrated a consistent talent for leading in a diverse range of areas at the university, all the while providing excellent counsel based on her extensive legal experience," Dr. Esteban says. “I am grateful for her willingness to serve as general counsel, and I look forward to working closely with her as DePaul continues to deliver our students a transformative education, grounded in our Catholic and Vincentian values."

Prior to DePaul, Stieber was a labor and employment associate at Jones Day. She also served as a judicial clerk for United States Magistrate Judge Jane J. Boyle in Dallas, Texas. Stieber is a graduate of the Southern Methodist University School of Law. She earned her bachelor's degree from Northwestern University.

“I am very grateful for this opportunity to serve the university in a new capacity and to lead the team of outstanding attorneys in the Office of the General Counsel," Stieber says. “The Office of the General Counsel is dedicated to supporting the university in its vision to be unequaled among urban universities in the United States, ensuring the success of a diverse community of leaders."

Stieber's appointment follows the May 27 announcement that José Padilla will leave DePaul to serve as vice president, general counsel and secretary to the Board of Regents at the University of Colorado. Padilla has served as DePaul's general counsel since 2005 and secretary for the university since 2019. An interim secretary for the university will be named soon.
