As part of DePaul Days, the Quad will be transformed into a playground of entertainment, student performances, art, food and more. Included in the fun will be Arts Fest, a celebration of work by talented students from across the university.

What they’re saying: “Arts Fest is going to be an incredible part of DePaul Days. There will be something for everyone, from paintings, drawings, printmaking and design to theatre and music. There are even some human computer interaction students who are displaying an invisible exhibition which features QR codes that link back to some online artwork. And a collaboration between School of Music and physics students who study sound. It’s going to be a rockin’ good time!” - Matthew Girson, professor, The Art School, College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences

What else will be featured: Arts Fest will also showcase students’ animation, theatre, photographs, sculpture, digital and web-based work and other media.

Colleges involved: Students from seven colleges submitted projects. Faculty leads are Girson, Christine Binder, head of lighting design in The Theatre School, Noelle Thomas, assistant professor in the Jarvis College of Computing and Digital Media, and Chuck Chandler, associate professor in the School of Music.

Timing: Friday, Oct. 24 from 2-6 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 25 from 1-5 p.m. Visit the Arts Fest tent to view this showcase of creativity that “proves that art is part of everyday life for everyone,” Girson says.

Sunday, Oct. 26 from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m., Arts Fest will move inside the Lincoln Park Student Center, and feature striking visual displays that will help facilitate thought-provoking conversations to spark connection and curiosity.

A full schedule of events featuring free opportunities at The Art School, the Richardson Art Gallery and DePaul Art Museum, and affordable performances by the School of Music and The Theatre School is available here.

Must-see at Arts Fest: Students from the arts and sciences are collaborating on a pair of fascinating musical exhibitions:

- Modular synthesizers were built by sound recording technology students, theatre students, physics & computer science students all in one class. Modules will be featured in this display along with a poster explaining more about them.

- The physics of sound manifests in the human voice. Using real-time spectrogram analysis tools, it’s possible to see volume, vowels and even different musical styles. A display will loop recordings of two DePaul graduate pedagogy students singing samples into software that provides real-time analysis of the resonances of the human voice in order to show the science in the art.
