University reminder on mask-wearing

Mask wearing guidelines poster

In alignment with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Chicago Department of Public Health, DePaul continues to highly recommend using a KN95 or N95 masks while indoors on-campus. (University Marketing and Communications)

As COVID-19 positivity rates around the nation continue to decline and parts of the country begin to roll back mitigation strategies, the latest guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Chicago Department of Public Health acknowledge mask-wearing continues to be an important strategy to prevent transmission of the virus.

DePaul will continue to monitor the situation. As the situation evolves, we will make adjustments. Regularly check DePaul's COVID-19 Updates and Guidance website for the university's latest on-campus safety guidelines.

In the meantime, please keep in mind cloth masks alone no longer meet the university's mask requirement. DePaul continues to highly recommend using one of the following while indoors on-campus:

  • Medical grade masks such as KN95 or N95 masks.
  • If you do not have an N95 or KN95 mask, double mask with a cloth mask over a surgical one.
  • A well-fitted surgical mask by itself is also acceptable but not preferable.

Get the most out of your mask

According to the City of Chicago, while surgical and KN95 masks are intended for single use, when used with other mitigation measures, they can be reused. To get the most of our your KN95 mask:

  • Make sure it's well-fitted to your face.
  • Wash your hands or use hand sanitizer before putting on and removing your mask.
  • Do not wash your KN95. Instead, store it in a dry paper bag to keep it clean between uses.
  • Discard your mask if it is:
    • Soiled.
    • Damaged.
    • Becomes stretched out, no longer covers your nose and mouth, or cannot stay on your face.
    • Is difficult to breathe through.
