Dawoud Bey: Portraits in Context seeks to open up the processes of portrait-making and exhibition-making by presenting a body of Bey’s photographs, Street Portraits, alongside portraits by other artists he has selected from DePaul Art Museum’s permanent collection. For this project, Bey approached the gallery as a site for conversation: “It’s not an artificial imposition, but it’s actually an extension of my thinking.” His intuitive installation brings the photographs into new contexts, allowing them to participate in a unique conversation with each other and with Bey’s own work.
