Over the course of 24 hours Siebren Versteeg’s “Daily Times (Performer)” transforms the front page of the New York Times into an abstract painting. Every morning software written by Versteeg automatically downloads the front page of the print edition of the New York Times. The artist’s algorithm is programmed to generate painterly gestures over the course of the day directly onto the image of the newspaper, slowly obscuring the text and creating an abstract image. By the end of each day an entirely new painting has been randomly created using digital tools to simulate the strokes and drips of the analog art making process. “Daily Times (Performer)” is both an observation of the ephemeral nature of news and a study of its repetition, even as each day renders new stories and headlines.
