Restarting campus phase 3 protocol


COVID 19 update

In alignment with the city's “Protecting Chicago" framework and the state's “Restore Illinois" guidelines, DePaul's protocol for on-campus events and activities during Phase 3 is outlined below. It is critical to note this is subject to change due to modifications to current guidance from city or state officials or a shifting in phases.

Please note that this does not apply to in-person classes. Summer I and II classes will be held remotely regardless of class size or the current “Protecting Chicago" phase. In addition, DePaul has advised employees to work from home through at least July 17. Telework and staying away from campus is strongly encouraged wherever possible. The new guidance primarily applies to rare instances when an on-campus gathering is under consideration.

In accordance with recommendations from the Illinois Department of Public Health and with DePaul's commitment to keeping people safe, virtual meetings should be considered first and foremost.  Departments considering an in-person gathering must be able to demonstrate why a virtual option is not possible.

If your department is considering an essential on-campus event or activity while in Phase 3, the following guidelines apply:

  • Virtual alternatives for the gathering were considered.
  • The gathering must be limited to 10 people or less.
  • All attendees must maintain strict social distancing (6 feet or more).
  • A face covering must be worn while on-campus.  Exceptions include: in a room ALONE with the door closed.
  • If ANY of the following applies, individuals should stay at home and NOT come to campus: 
  • The department sponsoring the event will be responsible for communicating necessary requirements on health screening prior to coming to campus, social distancing, and face coverings to all attendees prior to the day of the event.  The department must also maintain a list of attendees and contact information should it become necessary for contact tracing.

Event/activity requests should be submitted at: The online form will ask for the following:

  • Description of the event/gathering, including a statement on why a virtual gathering is not possible
  • Number of attendees expected
  • Contact person who will be responsible for communicating guidelines with attendees and maintaining list of attendees
  • Location preferred (Note: this process does not reserve the room/location. Regular room reservation processes apply AFTER this approval)

Please submit requests at least five business days in advance.  Requests will be reviewed within three business days.

Conferences Services will work with the Community Health and Monitoring Team to review requests. Criteria to approve events include: attendees will not exceed 10 per room, the room itself can accommodate the necessary social distancing, and the activity will allow for face coverings to be worn.  Adjustments may be necessary to ensure there is sufficient time before/after the event to clean the room and to ensure other events in nearby rooms do not create the potential for bottlenecking/crowding in one area.
