Faculty named Illinois ‘Researchers to Know’

Michelle Stuhlmacher, Jacob Furst and Heather Quinn recognized for their work in science and technology

The Illinois Science and Technology Coalition’s​ annual Researchers to Know list highlights groundbreaking research from universities across the state. ISTC collects nominations of faculty who have done excellent work in their fields. Three DePaul faculty members have made the 2024 list for demonstrating a commitment to innovation in science and technology.

Michelle Stuhlmacher

Stuhlmacher is an assistant professor in the Department of Geography and GIS where she uses satellite imaging to assess the impact of green space on urban systems. She has received grants from the NSF and NASA to conduct interdisciplinary research that aims to understand and fight environmental injustices that underprivileged communities face throughout Chicago. She is currently working on projects related to green space equity, green gentrification​ and making environmental data accessible to communities experiencing environmental injustice. 

Jacob Furst
Furst is a professor in the Jarvis College of Computing and Digital Media where he researches applications of machine learning and data mining in medicine. His current work focuses on understanding the limitations of machine learning in the context of uncertain labelling. He is a recipient of the DePaul University Spirit of Inquiry Award. He has received the DePaul University and Rosalind Franklin University of Science and Medicine grant to study the implementation of machine learning to investigate neurons.

Heather Quinn
Quinn is an assistant professor in the​​ School of Design and explores technology’s relationship with human freedoms. Quinn empowers communities to imagine possible futures through the practice of design fiction. She is currently editing the publication "Technologies of Deception" and serves as chair and director of design futures for Design Incubation. Her research and design fiction work reimagines the current design landscape while elevating diverse voices in the field.
