2020-21 BUILD diversity certificate program to focus on anti-racism and implicit bias

BUILD
Now in its seventh year, this year's BUILD diversity certificate program will host a variety of workshops, including sessions that focus on structural racism, anti-racism, implicit bias and microaggressions. All faculty and staff are welcome to register.

“The call for racial justice nationally, locally and on DePaul’s campus compels the university to address structural racism. We are working with campus stakeholders to address structural racism and provide diversity, equity and inclusion competency-based training addressing the roots of racism, how we can learn to be anti-racist and allyship," says Liz Ortiz, vice president for the Office of Institutional Diversity and Equity. "BUILD will offer workshops including, 'A thousand cuts: Addressing microaggressions, how to be an anti-racist' and 'The impacts of implicit bias.' BUILD also will focus on building a curriculum that addresses these themes with DePaul faculty and staff experts as well as external diversity, equity and inclusion presenters. OIDE is proud to work with the campus community in designing a dialogue that reflects the needs and concerns of our community.”

The university launched BUILD to offer faculty and staff the opportunity to develop their knowledge of diversity and to gain valuable skills and cultural competencies. BUILD provides participants with the "building blocks to an inclusive campus" by:

Building multicultural competencies
Understanding differences and how they impact the workplace
Inclusive excellence
Leveraging diversity and building leadership capacity
Developing measures of success

The program will be offered virtually during the 2020-21 academic year. Six information sessions are set for September. Faculty and staff are welcome to attend a session to learn more about the program. Registration is required.
