On Wednesday, April 22, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. On this day for the last 50 years, people all over the world have taken a moment to reflect on our planet. In his 2015 encyclical, “Laudato Si': On Care for Our Common Home," Pope Francis invited the human family to converse about our common home, taking time to reflect on the harmful ways we exploit the natural world and disregard human dignity through a globalization of indifference.
As a result of the COVID 19 crisis, numerous commentators have noticed a reduction in pollution and the return of wildlife to areas normally crowded by human activity. Pope Francis' invitation is particularly poignant this year. Over the next week, we invite members of the DePaul community to join in Earth Week activities that call attention to our common home and our place within it.
Additionally, the Archdiocese of Chicago will host a virtual prayer service on April 22, and all members of the university community are welcome to participate.
