DePaul will conduct a renaming ceremony at the John T. Richardson Library on Thursday, May 18, that honors Aspasia LeCompte as the new namesake for two university facilities.

Starting in the 1820s, LeCompte called upon U.S. courts to successfully challenge her enslavement and win liberty for herself and for her family members. Her name will grace both the Richardson Library's large conference room and the residence hall formerly known as Belden-Racine Hall.

The ceremony Thursday will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the library's Room 300, which will become the LeCompte Room. The ceremony will then move to the Aspasia LeCompte Residence Hall, where the building's new name will be recognized and celebrated. Lunch will be provided after the ceremony.

The event is sponsored by the Division of Mission and Ministry and the Task Force to Address Vincentians’ Relationship with Slavery. All are welcome to attend, and online registration is now open. Make plans to join this historic ceremony.
