Chen Qiufan, an award-winning science fiction novelist known also as Stanley Chen, will visit DePaul next week for an evening in honor of his being named the DePaul Humanities Center's 2022-2023 Humanities Laureate.
Chen's speculative fiction includes "The Waste Tide," set in a near-future China haunted by electronic waste and the ghost of extractionism, and "AI 2041: Ten Visions for Our Future," a short story collection co-authored with Kai-Fu Lee that explores potential rewards and risks in an era where artificial intelligence and human intelligence co-evolve.
A panel discussion featuring Chen is set for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 12, at Room 120 of the Lincoln Park Student Center. Titled "Writing the Future: Science Fiction and Climate Justice," the discussion will also include two DePaul faculty: poet, editor and activist Tara Betts and English professor John Shanahan.
