In memoriam: Noreen McCarthy, mother of the Real Estate Center's Kathleen O'Hare

Stained glass

It is with sadness we have learned of the death of Noreen McCarthy, the mother of Kathleen O'Hare, the associate director of the Real Estate Center. McCarthy died on March 26. May she rest in peace.

Noreen McCarthy

In search of better opportunities, in 1952 McCarthy boarded a boat in Ireland and sailed to the United States. It was one of the last ships to pass through Ellis Island. With the equivalent of $10 in her pocket, she found her way to Chicago. There she met and married Robert McCarthy and together they had five children: Robert, Thomas (Joel Gottsacker), Mary (Robert) Cadle, Kathleen (Sean) O'Hare and Paul (Tami) McCarthy. To help support her large family, she attended nursing school and became a highly regarded registered nurse in labor and delivery at Victory Hospital in Waukegan, Ill.

It has been said of McCarthy, “There are five elemental forces at work on this planet: earth, wind, fire, water and Noreen." She will be greatly missed.

Services will be held on Friday, April 1, at St. Gilbert Catholic Church in Grayslake, Ill. Visitation from 10 – 11 a.m. with funeral to follow from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m.  Condolences also may be submitted online.
