In memoriam: John Althoff and Kathleen McGonagle, father-in-law, mother of Campus Recreation’s Maureen McGonagle

It is with sadness we have learned of the deaths of John Althoff and Kathleen “Kathy” McGonagle, the father-in-law and mother of Maureen McGonagle, director of DePaul’s Campus Recreation. Althoff died on Aug. 3 at age 83. McGonagle died on Aug. 5 at age 77. May they rest in peace. 
John Althoff

Born in 1939, Althoff graduated from St. Anthony High School in Effingham, Illinois, in 1957. He continued his education to receive a bachelor’s degree in 1961 and a master’s degree in 1962 from the University of Illinois. He began his teaching career at Jacksonville High School where he taught social science for 33 years. During this time, he also taught night school classes for adults who were studying for their GED. He was active in the Boy Scouts with his sons and he enjoyed fishing and radio control airplanes. 

Althoff is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Lou, and his children, Susan (Mark) Gorton, Cliff (Maureen McGonagle) Althoff, Steve (Mary Troy) Althoff, Jim (Kris) Althoff, Rob (Kaight) Althoff and Deborah (Philip) Will. He was a beloved grandfather to Samantha Gorton, Henry, Eleanor, Joshua, Jacob, Zane, Sydney, John Paul, Adam, Emily, Rebecca, Marguerite, Elsa, Harrison, Joseph , Samuel and Jordan Will. 
A funeral mass will be held at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Effingham on Aug. 9 at 10:30 am with a graveside service to follow. Condolences may be left online at www.airsman-hires.com. 
Kathleen “Kathy” McGonagle

Born in 1945, McGonagle was the beloved wife of Robert McGonagle for 58 years. She was a devoted mother of Maureen (Cliff Althoff) McGonagle, Donna (Wayne) Katula, Cheryl (Vince) Iskrzycki,and Michele (Ian) MacLeod; proud grandmother of Henry, Eleanor, Joshua, Kate, Brad, David, Samantha, Daniel, Quinn and Graham; dear daughter of the late Bernard and Eleanor Funk; and adored sister of John (Mary) Funk, Bernie (Kristin) Funk, and the late Mary Deen (Vince) Nirtaut and the late Margaret Funk. She also is survived by many nieces and nephews. 

Visitation is set for Aug. 11 at Sheehy Funeral Home in Orland Park, Illinois, from 3 – 8 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at 9:45 a.m. on Aug. 12 at St. Michael Church in Orland Park. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis.
