Community Service Opportunities for Retired DePaul Faculty and Staff

RetireeCorps

Retired DePaul faculty and staff have the opportunity to volunteer with one of DePaul’s many partner organizations. RetireeCorps members can make a commitment of as little as an occasional portion of a day or as much as a year-long commitment of a designated number of hours per week, or anything in between. Members can provide a service related to professional expertise or learn something entirely new.

There are three basic categories of opportunities available:

1. Ad hoc opportunities that frequently arise.

Our partners are always looking for additional people who can assist with their projects. Organizations typically request that volunteers complete their own orientation process. Time / duration of commitment can be short or long; individuals work that out with the organization. Here is a sample of the kinds of opportunities that arise:

  • Organizing / putting on events to promote their services;
  • Capturing stories about their organization and the people they serve;
  • Analyzing data about their organization;
  • Creating /translating resource materials in languages other than English;
  • Creating / delivering professional development sessions to current CPS and Catholic School teachers on a topic related to your expertise;
  • Other requests as they arise.

2. Urban Education

  • Opportunities to serve in CPS and/or Catholic schools, as tutors, mentors, etc. These opportunities require a background check and online state-mandated training on working with minors. To respect the attachments with children that everyone hopes volunteers will form, CPS requires a commitment of at least 6 hours per week for the academic year. Catholic Schools have a more flexible expected time commitment.
  • Opportunities to work with Veterans. There are multiple ways that the Steans Center works with Veterans. Expectations for time / duration commitment will vary with the activity. Opportunities may include:
    • Assisting with after-school activities with families;
    • Providing assistance with writing resumes, job / school applications, etc.;
    • Capturing stories about veterans’ experiences;
    • Other opportunities that arise.

3. Activities related to education within the prison system. These opportunities also require an orientation; expected time commitment varies according to the activity.

  • Creating /delivering non-credit workshops (e.g. voter education, know your rights, etc.);
  • Capturing stories about the impact of prison education;
  • Other requests as they a rise.
