About the Steans Center

The Steans Center of DePaul University provides an academic bridge between the university and communities of Chicago that supports student learning, community development, and faculty teaching and scholarship.

We look forward to helping you connect your students to our community through 2019-2020 faculty workshops, one-on-one consultation, conversations on experiential education, and funded opportunities.

We can also help you

  • Develop strong partnerships with community members and organizations.
  • Connect with other faculty members who are interested in community based service learning.
  • Employ an asset-based community development approach.

Community-based Service Learning
Professor Lisa Dush Quote Box

Community-based Service Learning is a form of experiential education that engages

students in addressing issues of social justice while reflecting on their work in structured ways; service learning work is built on developing authentic relationships among students, faculty, and community partners (Mitchell 2008).

The Steans Center offers many resources to instructors interested in using community-based service learning as a dimension of their teaching and anyone interested in learning more; one good online resource is Jeffrey Howard’s Principles of Good Practice in Service Learning course design workbook (Howard, 2001).
