Jonathan Handrup is an Academic & Community Coordinator. He joined the Center's staff after completing his term as an Illinois Campus Compact AmeriCorps VISTA (2011-2013) and after working as a Graduate Assistant (2013-2015) on the Academic Service Learning team. He is responsible for locating new volunteer organizations in the Chicago area to partner with students and to provide fresh opportunities and platforms to serve in. In the Fall of 2012, Jonathan helped initiate the first departmental-wide service learning partnership in the university's history with DePaul's School of Nursing. He now places over 210 Graduate Nursing students in community-based organizations throughout Chicago over the course of an academic year. Before joining the Center, Jonathan worked in a congressional district office, concentrating on community outreach and canvassing neighborhoods in Illinois' 5th district. Prior to his time at the district office, he coordinated several service trips to New Orleans to assist in the Katrina rebuild. Experiences in the Lower 9th Ward gave him the desire to get involved with community and service organizations in his hometown of Chicago. He holds a BA in Creative Writing from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and an MS in Public Service Management from DePaul's School of Public Service.
