The deadline for the 2019-20 staff performance appraisals has been extended to Oct. 1. This decision was made in collaboration with Staff Council, and in response to feedback that pushing the due date back to Oct. 1 would help alleviate some stress given our current situation.
While the deadline has changed, the process and purpose remain the same. The opportunity for employees to have dedicated time with their managers to recognize their accomplishments, explore development opportunities, and discuss goals for the future has not lost its importance. Especially given the tremendous efforts of so many of our staff in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is well worth our time to focus on their achievements and development.

The plan for next year will be to move the due date to September. The university's goal in adjusting the date is to move the process closer to the intended timeline of finishing up one performance cycle before moving into another.
Over the last several years, our process has led to confusion as employees have often been reflecting on their performance over a time period that ended a full three months prior to completing their form. This time lag has the potential to take away from purpose and relevance when the employee and manager are so far removed from what they are discussing and fully into the work of the next year. It also results in staff and managers setting goals three to six months into the next performance year.
