Tips for successful performance appraisal meetings

Performance appraisals

DePaul's window for completing annual staff performance appraisals for the performance period of July 1, 2019, through June 30, 2020, is now in progress. Completed forms are due to the Office of Human Resources by Sept. 1.

While this year's performance appraisal meetings will most likely be held virtually, strategies for a meaningful performance discussion through video chat are the same as in person:

  • Schedule the one-hour meeting about a month in advance to allow enough preparation time before the formal meeting takes place—check out DePaul's recommended performance appraisal timeline for details.
  • Reflect on specific performance goals and/or the most important contributions the employee was expected to make to the university or department's success. When did an employee go “above and beyond" in a way that enhanced the performance of the department? Were there missed opportunities? For managers who may need to address performance issues, the Performance Issue Root-Cause Diagnostic tool can help.
  • Recognize shifting priorities or the switch to remote work may have affected an employee's original performance goal. In these cases, it's recommended instead of editing the text of the goals, details about what changed should be provided in the comments section of the goals.
  • Make a plan for goal setting and consider professional development opportunities for the next performance cycle. What strengths can the employee use more frequently on the job? What competencies might be developed to improve performance or prepare for future roles? What opportunities are there to use strengths more frequently or improve development areas?
