Program Description
DePaul's Spring Quarter Merida, MX Program is designed to provide students with a deeper understanding of how the global political economy impacts local communities with a focus specifically on the role of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in community development.
Participants who wish to extend their study abroad experience, will work with Emiliano Zapata Sur for a total of 100 hours and receive a stipend of $2000. Students will also take two Spanish language classes to supplement their service-learning internship. Students may choose between a selection of Advanced Spanish classes at the Autonomous University of the Yucatan (UADY) in addition to enrolling in a bilingual online course.
Requirements
- Spanish 104 or higher (proficiency exam to be completed prior to departure)
- Enrollment in Winter Study Abroad Program in Merida
- Enrollment in CSS 395 Commuinty Internships (NGO Studies in Mexico)
Application
Applications will be available in Fall 2024
Credits
Students will receive 4 credits per Spanish language course and 4 credits for the internship course. A total of 12 will be earned.
Housing
Students will continue to live with their host family.
Costs
In addition to DePaul tuition for 12 credits, there is a program fee (please see the Study Abroad website). The fee will cover room and board, three meals a day, and study abroad health insurance. Students must plan their budgets accordingly to cover any additional expenses.
