Career Experience Opportunities & Resources

This page provides resources for finding and, in some instances, connecting you with various career experiences from volunteering to micro internships and to internships and jobs. We recommend scheduling an appointment with a Career Coach to discuss what type of opportunity is right for you and to explore how it will support your career readiness journey. We will continue to update this page with additional resources throughout the year.

Early Engagement Career Experiences

The resources below are great for getting started with and doing some earlier-on career experiences. These types of experiences are a great way to build skills and explore options without the time commitment or rigor of a full-on internship or job. For more information about the types of experiences, check out our Career Experiences 101 page

An informational interview is a conversation with a professional about their career path, profession, organization and industry with the goal of learning about a field, get career advice, build your network and hone your interviewing skills. These conversations are low-stakes but highly productive. For more information on how to prepare for, set up, and conduct an informational interview, check out the Career Center’s resource page

Job shadowing is joining a practicing professional during their workday to get a sense of that professional’s role or field. It’s typically short in duration, ranging from a day to a week. While there are occasionally DePaul-sponsored shadowing opportunities posted to Handshake, this is typically something that students set up on their own by connecting with professionals in roles/industries of interest to the student. The Career Center has a page on job shadowing with tips and resources for getting started, a job shadowing Career Library resource, and our Career Coaches can support you through the experience as well.

Forage: Forage is a great and free resource that connects you with a variety of job simulations and courses, allowing you the opportunity to apply and test out your knowledge and skills. Forage works directly with employers to offer these real-world simulations and projects, and students can access general feedback about what successful completion of the projects would look like.

LinkedIn Learning: LinkedIn offers high-quality courses and micro-learning that are provided by accomplished teachers and recognized industry experts. These are great opportunities to hone and develop a variety of technical and soft skills that will support you in your career readiness journey. DePaul students have free access to LinkedIn Learning and can learn more about accessing it through DePaul here

Parker Dewey: Current DePaul students and recent graduates can find and apply to short-term, paid, professional projects that allow you to build and demonstrate skills while exploring potential career paths.

Internships

Internships are short-term positions, typically lasting for an academic quarter or summer, designed for students to get exposure to workplace settings and learn more about the industry. They are designed to provide opportunities for hands-on application of knowledge and skills, learning and professional development, and, oftentimes, future employment. Internships can be paid or unpaid, full- or part-time. Some internships will qualify for enrollment in an academic internship course so that students can also earn academic credit for the experience (for more information, check out CLD 250).
