Editing Groups in D2L

Once you've created a set of groups in your D2L course, you have a few options for making changes to them: changing the name of a category, adding or deleting groups from a category, or changing the name of individual groups in a category.

Unfortunately you cannot change how students are enrolled in groups once you've created them. You'll need to instead create a new set of groups and delete your old one. 

Change the Name of a Category

  1. Go to the Groups area in your D2L course site.
  2. Select the category on the View Categories dropdown menu. (If you only have one category, it will be selected by default.) The category and a list of its groups will be displayed.
  3. Click the dropdown arrow to the right of the category's name, then select Edit Category.

  4. Change the name of the category in the Category Name textbox at the top of the page.
  5. Click the Save button at the bottom of the page.

Add a Group to a Category

  1. Go to the Groups area in your D2L course site.
  2. Select the category on the View Categories dropdown menu. (If you only have one category, it will be selected by default.) The category and a list of its groups will be displayed.
  3. Click the dropdown arrow to the right of the category's name, then select Add Group. The Add Group pop-up window will open.

  4. Edit the name of your group if you don't want to use the default one.
  5. Click the Save button at the bottom of the window. It will close, and the new group will appear on the list of groups within the category. 

Delete a Category or a Group

  1. Go to the Groups area in your D2L course site.
  2. Select the category on the View Categories dropdown menu. (If you only have one category, it will be selected by default.) The category and a list of its groups will be displayed.
  3. Select the checkbox to the left of the name of the category or group that you want to delete. (If you delete a category, all of its groups will also be deleted.)
  4. Click the Delete link. It appears at both the top and bottom of your list of groups, and there's a trash can icon next to it. A confirmation dialog box will open.

  5. Click the Delete Groups/Categories button. The dialog box will close, and the category and/or group will be deleted.

Change the Name of a Group

  1. Go to the Groups area in your D2L course site.
  2. Select the group's category on the View Categories dropdown menu. (If you only have one category, it will be selected by default.) The category and a list of its groups will be displayed.
  3. Click the name of the group. The Edit Group page will open.

  4. Edit the group's name in the Group Name textbox.
  5. Click the Save button at the bottom of the page. You'll return to the Manage Groups page, and the group's new name will be displayed.
