Using the Question Library in D2L

D2L's question library is a repository for quiz questions. You can use it to not only store quiz questions, but also randomly add questions or subsets of questions to your quiz.

Add Sections to the Question Library

As a best practice, we recommend that you create a section in your Question Library, then add your quiz questions to this section. This will make it easier for you to select the questions you want to add to your quiz, especially if you plan to randomize the questions on your quiz. (See the Randomizing Quizzes guide for more information.)

  1. Go to your course's Quizzes area. The Manage Quizzes page will open.
  2. Click the Question Library link at the top of the page.
  3. Click the New button at the top of the page, and select Section. The New Section page will open.
  4. Enter a name for the section in the "Section Name" field.
  5. Click the Save button at the bottom of the page. You'll return to the Question Library page, and your new section will appear in its list of items.

Add Questions to the Question Library

There are 12 question types in D2L (multiple-choice, written response, etc.), and the process for building each question type is slightly different. This section provides an overview of the process, but detailed, step-by-step instructions for each question type can be found on the D2L Resource Center website.

  1. Go to your course's Quizzes area. The Manage Quizzes page will open.
  2. Click the Question Library link at the top of the page.
  3. Click the section to which you want to add questions.
  4. Click the New button at the top of the page, then select the question type you want to add from the dropdown menu.
  5. Fill out all required fields for the question type you selected:
    • You must always fill out the “Question Text” field. This is what is displayed to students.
    • All question types have an optional “Title” field. If you do not enter a title, the system will use the full question text as the title. The title is never displayed to students.
    • “Weight” refers to what percent credit a student will receive for selecting an answer. For multiple choice, true/false, and related questions, enter “100” in the “Weight” column to indicate the correct answer. You can also use “Weight” to give partial credit to other answers.
    • Text in the Feedback field to the right of an answer gives information to students who select that answer. They will only be able to see it after they have submitted their answers to the quiz.
    • Text you enter in the "Question Hints" field can be viewed by students as they are answering the question.
  6. When you are finished creating your question, save your work.
    • Click Save if you want to save the question and return to the main Question Library page.
    • Click Save and Copy if you want to save the question you just created and create a new question of the same type that retains the current question’s properties.
    • Click Save and New to save the question and to continue creating questions of the same type.

NOTE: You can preview questions as they will appear to students by clicking the Preview button at the bottom of the page.

Import Questions to your Quiz from the Question Library

  1. Go to the quiz into which you want to import questions.
  2. Click the Add/Edit Questions button.
  3. Click the Import on the top-left side of the page. A new page will open that allows you to select quiz questions within your course.
  4. Select From an existing collection on the “Import Source” dropdown menu. (Since this is the default option, usually it is already selected.)
  5. Select Question Library on the “Source Collection” drop-down menu.
  6. Select the section in your Question Library that you want to import questions from on the “Source Section” drop-down menu (or Collection Root to view a list of all questions in your Question Library.) A list of the questions will appear below these selections.
  7. Select the checkboxes next to the questions you want to import.
  8. Click the Save button when you are done selecting questions. The ones that you selected will now be added to your quiz.

Once you've added questions to the Question Library, you can create quizzes with randomized questions. View the Randomizing Quizzes guide for more information.
